Mozilla Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1

Firefox is the only browser that really managed to bite up some of Internet Explorer’s market share, being currently used by about 20% of the total internet users. And it does have a lot of advantages: it is small, fast, displays pages correctly, it is safe and can be customized to a very high level using the add-ons. It also features an integrated search (you can use any search engine from the bar, find out how here), Find As You Type accessibility and the privacy controls really enable you to cover your tracks if your computer is shared by other people.

The pop-up control and the tabbed browsing are really taken to a great level in Firefox 3.6 Alpha. In addition, you will find that Firefox 3.6 Alpha keeps the same low computer requirements as its older brothers: Pentium at 233 MHz (500 or better recommended), 64 MB of RAM memory (128 or better recommended) and only 52 MB of free hard drive space.

Firefox 3.5.3 fixes the following issues:

Several security issues

Impact key:

• Critical: Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.
• High: Vulnerability can be used to gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions.
• Moderate: Vulnerabilities that would otherwise be High or Critical except they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps.
• Low: Minor security vulnerabilities such as Denial of Service attacks, minor data leaks, or spoofs. (Undetectable spoofs of SSL indicia would have "High" impact because those are generally used to steal sensitive data intended for other sites.

Fixed several stability issues:

• MFSA 2009-51 Chrome privilege escalation with FeedWriter

• MFSA 2009-50 Location bar spoofing via tall line-height Unicode characters

• MFSA 2009-49 TreeColumns dangling pointer vulnerability

Mozilla closes security hole with Firefox 3.5.1

v.3.5.1, released July 16th, 2009

Mozilla updated Firefox to version 3.5.1 for Windows, Mac, and Linux on Thursday, fixing a security problem, improving stability, and speeding launch time on some Windows systems, according to the release notes.

"We strongly recommend that all Firefox 3.5 users upgrade to this latest release," browser director Mike Beltzner said in a blog post Thursday.

Firefox 3.5 embodies Mozilla's hope to build a better foundation for Web applications, but about two weeks after its debut, a vulnerability in the browser's JavaScript engine came to light. Mozilla rated it "critical" because an attacker could create a Web site that would run malicious code on the computer.

The new version can be installed from Mozilla's download site or by selecting "Check for Updates" in the Help menu. Unfortunately, when I did so, the Firefox warned me that the newly updated Gears 0.5.29.0 plug-in from Google becomes incompatible again.
